Research Technician

Canadian Organic Grower’s (COG) mission is to provide education, advocacy, and leadership to help build an agricultural system that empowers farmers and consumers, enhances human health, builds community, and mitigates climate change while increasing Canadian food sovereignty (www.cog.ca).

Summary of Contract:

COG is seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to conduct research activities, data analysis, literature analysis, report writing, and educational and outreach activities. The Research Technician will be working remotely with direction from COG’s Senior Science Advisor and reporting to the project manager.

This individual will assist COG in executing its vision on COG’s project entitled ‘Canadian Access Project: Strengthening Organic Supply Chains for Domestic and Export Opportunities (CAP)’. This is a two-year project (2019-2022) with the goal to identify the systemic, cultural and sectoral supply chain barriers preventing increased domestic supply of organic products from reaching the market efficiently. It will also produce data and a report on achieving the related environmental benefits, specifically soil carbon sequestration, of organic practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-create a field soil sampling design
  • Maintain the project’s soil archive
  • Coordinate data organization and analysis
  • Enter data and conduct statistical analysis and interpretation
  • Obtain and review relevant literature
  • Assist in writing a white paper on the impact of increasing the domestic supply of organic products on the environment and ecosystem services
  • Disseminate this knowledge to producers, researchers, extension personnel, industry professionals, and policymakers throughout the region and country

Working Conditions

Work involves exposure to both public and private communities. Work is subject to deadlines and interruptions. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a virtual team environment and working remotely.

Education and Experience Requirements

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in biology, soil science, plant science, environmental science, agronomy or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with organizations that provide in-field and or laboratory research services.
  • 1 to 3 years proven work experience as a researcher or similar role.
  • Computer literacy in a Windows environment including database management and website navigation.
  • Hands-on experience with agronomic tools.
  • Superior communications skills, both written and oral, are required along with a strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with COG’s members, co-workers, and volunteers in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple deadlines and adapt to changes in priorities and schedules.

Assets include:

  • Awareness of the organic agriculture industry trends, technology, and developments
  • Understanding of agriculture supply chain dynamics including supporting data-mining efforts to identify and clarify market opportunities and their scale
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both of Canada’s official languages
  • Proficient in statistical analysis
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and geo-locating sampling sites
  • Experience with field sampling – specifically soil sampling

Contract Duration

This employment contract will start in January 2022 and end in June 2022 for 15 to 40 hours per week.

Contract Payment

COG will pay up to $40 an hour (plus applicable taxes), paid every two weeks upon receipt of a detailed invoice.
