Previously known as the “BX Ranchlands\,” this property was newly named the sncəcmałqtn Agricultural Park in consultation with the Okanagan Indian Band\, to honour the Syilx Territory it is part of. sncəcmałqtn translates to “place of small crops or garden” (for a pronunciation guide please refer to this audio recording). \nThe spacious site was recently transformed into a public park\, farm and land-sharing project. Last year\, the Regional District of North Okanagan opened applications for small farm plots (in collaboration with the B.C. Land Matching Program)\, and many farmers have now moved into the space. Owner and operator Michael Silver first established the farm over 10 years ago\, on leased land. When the land was sold in 2023\, Michael worked with the B.C. Land Matching Program to develop a land agreement with the new landholders. Since then\, Earth Temple Gardens has continued to supply the community with organic vegetables and medicinal herbs. Michael’s mission is to grow healthy produce in the most sustainable way possible – he believes that nourishing local communities and enriching the biodiversity of the land are far from mutually exclusive. \nDuring the farm tour\, we will learn about Michael’s approach to sustainable agriculture and his experience selling through multiple sales channels\, including: farmers’ markets\, farm stand\, and wholesale. If you’re looking to access farmland\, or are curious about sharing your land with a farmer\, then join us in Smithers on September 6th to start your land sharing journey with the B.C. Land Matching Program! \nWhy share land? The number of farmers in B.C. has been declining for several decades\, and thousands of local farms have disappeared. Farm operators are ageing out of farming and retiring\, but with the cost of farmland at an all-time high\, many new farmers can’t afford to buy land and continue their legacy. That’s why the B.C. Land Matching Program exists\, and our annual educational land sharing workshops offer an opportunity for farmers and landholders to connect with each other and learn how to share land. \nJoin Andrew – the Central-North Land Matcher – to learn how you can access land for farming or make your land available to a farmer. Andrew will guide you through a self-assessment activity to help you create an action plan for your own land sharing journey.
