Why get certified? By verifying that food is produced meeting rigorous national standards for soil health, animal welfare, biodiversity, and input use, organic certification builds transparency and creates consumer trust. Organic certified businesses also have access to growing markets and premium prices. Organic is more than just a label—it’s a powerful mark of a commitment to farming in a way that creates a healthier world.
Beyond business advantages, all certified operators in BC can become members of Organic BC, joining a growing community of farmers and advocates committed to farming in a way that protects the environment and supports healthy communities. As a certified or transitional producer, you also gain the support of many other organizations, such as the Canadian Organic Growers, the Organic Federation of Canada and the Canada Organic Trade Association.
The British Columbia Certified Organic Program (BCCOP) is open to businesses operating and marketing their products within BC’s borders. Operating since 1993, the program is administered by the Certified Organic Associations of BC (COABC) and is sanctioned by the Government of British Columbia through the Organic Certification Regulation under the Food and Agricultural Products Classification Act.
Products certified under the BC Certified Organic Program are produced according to the Canadian Organic Standards. The BCCOP Operator’s Manual, Organic Production Standards and the Labelling of Organic Products contains the policies and procedures governing the BC Certified Organic Program, including product labelling requirements and the use of the BCCOP logo. The manual complements the Canadian Organic Standards by providing extra guidance and information regarding certification procedures and product labelling requirements of the BCCOP.
The following certification bodies (CB) are accredited by the COABC to certify to the BCCOP:
Each CB is unique and services may vary according to scope of products, fee structure, or additional standards offered. Contact them directly to learn more.
